Alfred Hanwell was born in Kensington and enlisted at Chiswick. Serving with the Royal Field Artillery he entered the France / Flanders theatre of war on 14 October 1914. As a Sergeant with “A” Battery, 124th Brigade, he was killed in action, France/Flanders, on 20 April 1917, aged 34 years. He was buried in the Henin Communal Cemetery Extension.
