Connel O’Donel was born in Nusseerabad on 16 June 1837, the son of Lieutenant-Colonel Hugh O’Donel, 13th Bengal N.I. and Jane, his wife. He entered the Indian Army in March 1857, joining the 67th Regiment N.I. During the Indian Mutiny, after the disarming of his regiment he served with the Agra Volunteer cavalry and infantry, being present at the action at Supia, 5 July 1857, at Allygarh, 24 August and Agra 10 August 1857. He was mentioned in the despatches of Lieutenant-Colonel Cotton Commanding the Agra Brigade. He then served as a staff officer to the force under Major Montgomery. O’Donel served in the China campaign as a Lieutenant with the 8th Regiment N.I. and was present at the action at Sinho, capture of Tangchow, Taku Forts and the surrender of Pekin. He was appointed Town Major of the Taku Forts after their capture and served as staff officer to the convoy under Col. Holcombe, 1st Royals, on the march from Tientsin to Pekin. In the Bhootan campaign, he served as Sub Assistant Commissary General and was present in southern Afghanistan from September 1880. Sold with copied record of service and other service papers.
