Frederick Bower was born on 16 November 1851, and attested for the Cavalry on 12 November 1869. He served in the 10th Hussars for 32 years and saw active service in Afghanistan and in Egypt at El-Teb and Tamaai when Sergeant Instructor of Fencing. He was appointed to the King’s Body Guard on 26 September 1901, and was present at the inspection of the Guard by King Edward VII on 2 June 1910. He was awarded the M.S.M. without annuity in 1932 (AO 127), after 63 years’ service in uniform when the fourth senior Yeoman of the Guard. For some unexplained reason the award of the M.S.M. was announced again in AO 16 of 1935.
