Roy Leonard Binding was born at Pietermaritzburg, South Africa, on 21 February 1908, and enlisted into the Royal Garrison Artillery on 30 May 1923, aged 15. He transferred to the 10th Hussars in September 1931 and was posted to the Royal Dragoons in February 1937, becoming Sergeant in June 1939. He was assigned to Troop Ship Duties from April 1941 until September 1946. Also entitled to France and Germany clasp.
