D.C.M. London Gazette 16 August 1917: ‘For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. He displayed the utmost courage in carrying important messages through heavy hostile barrage. Later, when told to rest, he went up to the front line and helped to carry in wounded under severe shelling and sniping. He set a splendid example to all.’
