M.M. London Gazette 20 September 1945. The recommendation states:
‘As a forward stretcher bearer this man has in his unit a reputation second to none. He has been constantly employed in these duties during the whole Italian campaign. With his splendid physique, his infectious laugh, his immense capacity for hard work and complete disregard of danger, he has proved an inspiration to all ranks who serve with him.
During the past months of static fighting he has maintained his high standard of cheerful courage in facing the dangers of stretcher bearing and the discomfort of cold and wet winter weather.
His willingness to face shellfire and other hazards of forward evacuation have undoubtedly been the means of saving lives of his patients and his whole conduct has been no mean factor in maintaining the morale of his Company at a high level.’
