Henry Gann was born in Tramore, Waterford, on 17 May 1881 and entered naval service on 23 October 1896 as a Boy 2nd Class in H.M.S. Impregnable. Drafted to Endymion as an Ordinary Seaman on 7 June 1899, he was promoted Able Seaman on 14 April 1901, serving in her until 4 September 1902. He served in H.M.S. Hector and Greenwich during the Great War.
