George E. Holmes attested for the Royal Engineers (Territorial Force) and served with the 50th (Northumberland) Divisional Signal Company during the Great War on the Western Front from 17 April 1915, being awarded the Military Medal. He saw further service with the Durham Light Infantry, and transferred to Class ‘Z’ Reserve on 6 February 1919.
