Gordon Stewart Wimbush was born at Finchley, Middlesex in 1890 and attested for the Honourable Artillery Company Infantry at Armoury House, Finsbury on 2 September 1914. He served with the 1st/1st Battalion during the Great War from 18 September 1914, initially at St. Nazaire on the Lines of Communication and then on the Western Front with the 3rd Division from 10 November. At Hooge, on 16 June 1915, while serving in his capacity as a stretcher-bearer with A Company, he received a gunshot wound to the head and was repatriated to England one week later. He was discharged, on account of his wounds, on 24 December 1915 and was awarded a Silver War Badge.
