William Nicholas was born in Pembroke in December 1843. Having previously served with H.M.S. Favorite, in October 1875 he was posted to the guard ship at Bermuda, H.M.S. Terror, as Captain’s Steward and remained with her until May 1878. It was whilst serving with this ship that he was awarded his Long Service and Good Conduct Medal. He later served with H.M.S. Agincourt from June 1880 until June 1887.
