Frank William Turner was born at Plumstead, London in July 1900 and enlisted into the Royal Navy in August 1917 as a Boy Second Class. He saw operational service during the Great War aboard the battleship H.M.S. Barham and was awarded his Long Service and Good Conduct Medal in December 1934 whilst on the crew of the heavy cruiser H.M.S. Kent. During the Second World War he served aboard the minesweeper H.M.S. Stoke and the survey ship H.M.S. Franklin.
