Angus Smith was born in Barra, Ross-shire, in 1874 and attested for the 3rd (Militia) Battalion, Seaforth Highlanders at Stornoway on 16 November 1891. He embarked with the Battalion for Egypt on 14 February 1900, and returned to Southampton on 10 June 1901.
