Robert Richardson was born in Alston, Carlisle, Cumberland, on 12 September 1884, and enlisted in the Royal Marines at Newcastle-upon-Tyne on 24 March 1915, a coal miner by occupation. He served with the Royal Marines during the Great War, before being invalided to the U.K. on 27 September 1915, and was discharged ‘to former employer’ on 20 April 1916.
