A Byzantine 12th century bronze reliquary cross pendant, formed in two halves with hinged suspension loop and hinged base (still functioning), the front decorated with the figure of Christ on the cross, the reverse a standing figure of Virgin Mary, nimbate with heads of Saints in the three corners, 10.5 x 4.7cm. £260-£300
Reliquary cross pendants are referred to as encolpion and were worn on a chain suspended around the neck by Bishops and held holy relics inside.
