Newcastle Exchange Bank, for Surtees, Burdon & Brandling, £5, 2 January 1802, serial number A1898, signature of John Brandling, nice clean paper, attractive very good
Outing 1502h £100-£150
This note is exceptional because it bears two duty stamps. There were changes in the law in both 1799 and 1801, and this meant that duty on the issuing of notes increased. The two stamps on this show likely that the note was sent to Somerset House, had its duty stamp added, and was returned to the issuing bank. Before it could be issued, the duty increased, and it had to be returned to Somerset House and an additional stamp added.
This lot was sold as part of a special collection, The David Muscott Collection of Northern County Provincial Banknotes.
