George Walter Winters was born in Morton near Bourne, Lincolnshire in July 1877. He joined the Royal Navy as a Stoker 2nd Class in March 1898, and advanced to Stoker 1st Class in October 1899. Winters joined the Royal Fleet Reserve in June 1905, and served with H.M.S. Kent (armoured cruiser), October 1914 - June 1918 (awarded L.S. & G.C. September 1915). During the latter period she was engaged at the Battle of Falklands, where she sank the German light cruiser Nürnberg.
Winters was demobilised in January 1919.
