Five: Brigadier General T. S. Brown, 55th Regiment, later Brigade Commander
Crimea 1854-56, 3 clasps, Alma, Inkermann, Sebastopol, the backstraps of the first two clasps inscribed ‘Presented by Her Majesty in person’ (Captain) regiment indistinct through contact wear; India General Service 1854-95, 1 clasp, Bhootan (Major, H.M.’s 55th Regt.); Afghanistan 1878-80, no clasp (Brigr. Genl.); Order of the Medjidie, 5th class, silver, gold and enamels, the reverse inscribed (Major, 55th Regt.); Turkish Crimea 1855, Sardinian issue, fitted with contemporary replacement ring suspension, the first with contact marks, nearly very fine, otherwise good very fine and better (5) £800-900

Thomas Southwell Brown was first commissioned into the 55th Regiment on 14 November 1845, promoted Lieutenant in May 1848, and Captain in August 1854. He served in the Eastern Campaign of 1854 and up to the 26th February 1855 with the 55th Regiment, including the battles of Alma and Inkermann, and the siege of Sebastopol (Medal with three clasps, 5th class of the Medjidie and the Turkish medal). He received his Crimean medal from the hands of Queen Victoria at the parade in Hyde Park. Promoted Major in September 1856, he next served with the Bhootan Expedition in 1866, as 2nd-in-command of the 55th Regiment (Medal and clasp). Promoted to Lieutenant Colonel in March 1868, and retired Colonel in June 1876, Brown was recalled as a temporary Brigadier General to serve on the staff during the 1st Afghanistan War of 1878, taking part in the march from Quetta to the relief of Kandahar (Mentioned in despatches and medal without clasp). Sold with additional research including copies of two photographs of the recipient.
