Chief Officer G. Lee Tuppen, of the Rangoon Brigade, was a former engineer with the Merryweather Company. It was at Tuppen’s suggestion in 1924 that Merryweather built him a motor turntable unit in which the ladder could be elevated hydraulically, a landmark development in the history of the fire engine.
