Bellerophon holding Pegasus, figure crawling up rock face in background, edge plain, 14.89g/12h (DH 36; Stainton 43). From the usual flawed and uncompleted reverse die, rust marks both sides, otherwise good very fine and about as struck, extremely rare (£300-400)

12 struck. John Milton (1759-1805), assistant engraver at the Royal Mint, 1787-97. He was removed from his post after admitting to supplying dies for the counterfeiting of louis d’or and other foreign gold coins, but nevertheless the high quality of his work ensured continued commissions from the private sector, the dies for which he executed at his premises, 3 Rolls buildings, Fetter lane
