Wilfred Morris was born in Bodmin, Cornwall, on 20 June 1896, and entered the Royal Navy as a Writer Third Class on 23 August 1915, a Clerk by profession. He served during the Great War in H.M.S. Ajax from 24 November 1915 to 19 February 1918, and was present in her at the Battle of Jutland, 31 May 1916. He was invalided suffering from tuberculosis of the lungs on 27 March 1918, and was awarded a Silver War Badge.
