F. W. Machin attested for the Royal Horse Artillery and served with them during the Great War on the Western Front from 19 October 1914.

Sold together with a small glazed pendant containing two photographs of the recipient, one in civilian dress, the other in uniform; and a large portrait of the recipient in uniform, mounted in a contemporary wooded glazed frame (total size 660mm x 560mm).
