George Reginald Stone was educated at the Oxford High School and left in 1896, when he found employment in the University’s Bodleian Library, after which he was apprenticed to engineers and a pattern maker. He served with the Oxfordshire Light Infantry in South Africa during the Boer War, and subsequently with the 6th Battalion, Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry, during the Great War. He was transferred to the reserve in May 1919.
