James Beckley attested for the Oxfordshire Light Infantry and served with the 1st Battalion in South Africa during the Boer War. He died of disease at Bloemfontein on 21 May 1900. He is commemorated on the Memorial at Coombe Hill, Buckinghamshire, and on the Boer War Memorial to the Oxfordshire Light Infantry at Edward Brooks Barracks, Abingdon.
