James Smith is recorded in the British Army Worldwide Index for 1841, as a Private serving in the Depot, 52nd Regiment at Athlone, and in 1851 he is a Corporal, and is based at Limerick. He appears on the 52nd Regiment medal roll for the Indian Mutiny Medal, with clasp for Delhi.
