Naval General Service 1793-1840, 2 clasps, Acre 30 May 1799, Egypt (John Williams.) edge bruise, otherwise toned, good very fine £2,000-£2,600
Approximately 40 clasps were issued for ‘Acre 30 May 1799’.
John Williams served as an Able Seaman in H.M.S. Tigre at Acre, and in the same rate in the same vessel at Egypt.
Numerous men with this name appear on the Admiralty Claimants’ Roll, including at least a dozen claims for the single clasp Syria. Only one man with the name John Williams appears on the Roll for Acre 30 May 1799, and a single clasp medal (without the Egypt clasp) was sold at Glendining’s in October 1949. The medal offered here appears to be entirely as issued and is probably a second medal issued in error to the same recipient after the Egypt clasp was authorised in 1850.
