Walter Arnold Young was born in Oxford on 13 April 1891, and was employed as a bank clerk with the London County and Westminster Bank Ltd. from 1907 to 1914. He attested for the Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry and served with the 7th Battalion until being commissioned as a Temporary Second Lieutenant in the 3rd Battalion on 18 December 1914, and served with them during the Great War on the Western Front. He was posted to the Royal Air Force on attachment in April 1918, attending No. 4 Training Squadron, No. 25 Training Squadron and No. 5 T.D.S., being promoted to Lieutenant (P) on 12 November 1918. He re-joined his parent unit on 6 June 1919, and relinquished his commission on 26 October 1920.
