William McGrath enlisted into the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve on 15 October 1942, as Aircraft hand / Flight Mechanic and was allocated service number 2213738. Following postings to several training bases and units, he was posted in succession to 31 Squadron, 115 Squadron and 267 Squadron. He was released from 267 Squadron in June 1946, but re-enlisted into the Royal Air Force on 26 January 1947, serving successively in 12 Squadron, 230 Operational Conversion Unit and 101 Squadron, Binbrook. He was appointed Flight Engineer on 5 April 1944 and Air Engineer on 1 September 1950. He attained the rank of Flight Sergeant on 23 April 1945.
