James Lythe was born in Hull, Yorkshire, and enlisted into the 3rd Regiment of Foot Guards on 25 December 1794, aged 19, a hair dresser by trade. He fought with his regiment in Egypt in 1801, at the battle of Barrosa in 1811, and at Waterloo in 1815. He was discharged at London on 5 April 1816, ‘being old and worn out’. He is also entitled to the M.G.S. medal with two Clasps.
