James May was born in Stoke Damerel, Devon, on 1 October 1847 and joined H.M.S. Britomart on 25 April 1866. He was discharged on 9 February 1870 for passage on Barracouta, but re-enlisted on 1 January 1873 for service in H.M.S. Cadmus until 26 November 1874.
