James Henry G. Casserly was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Indian Army in October 1891, and was advanced to Lieutenant in the 20th Bombay Infantry in June 1893. At the time of his participation in the Boxer rebellion, he was serving as a Double Company Commander and in July 1901 he was advanced to Captain. Although placed on the Retired List as a Major in October 1909, he would appear to have seen service with the 120th Rajputs in 1915 and as a Staff Captain in the following year.
