A fine Great War C.B., C.M.G. group of nine awarded to Major-General W. S. Anthony, Royal Army Veterinary Corps, Director of Veterinary Services to Indian Expeditionary Force “D” in Mesopotamia during the Great War, later Colonel Commandant R.A.V.C.

Order of The Bath, C.B. (Military) Companion’s neck badge, silver-gilt and enamels, with full neck cravat; Order of St. Michael and St. George, C.M.G., Companion’s neck badge, silver-gilt and enamels, with full neck cravat; India General Service 1895-1902, 1 clasp, Punjab Frontier 1897-98 (Vety. Ltt., A.V. Deptt.); 1914-15 Star (Major, A.V.C.); British War and Victory Medals, with M.I.D. oak leaf (Lt. Col.); Delhi Durbar 1911; Jubilee 1935; Coronation 1937, together with companion set of miniature medals (lacking DD 1911), both sets mounted as worn but ribbons very distressed and some medals detached, otherwise nearly extremely fine (17)

William Samuel Anthony was born on 3 January 1874. He served with the Army Veterinary Department in the operations on the Punjab Frontier 1897-98 (Medal with clasp); Captain October 1903; Major, R.A.V.C., October 1911; served with Indian Expeditionary Force “D” in Mesopotamia, October 1914 to June 1917, at various times as Deputy Director, Assistant Director, and Director of Veterinary Services in that theatre (Despatches London Gazette 5 April and 19 October 1916, and 15 August 1917; brevet Lieutenant-Colonel; C.M.G.).

Anthony became Director-General Army Veterinary Services in 1929, was made C.B. in 1930, and retired in 1933. The following year he became Colonel Commandant R.A.V.C. Major-General Anthony died on 15 March 1943.
