Lorne Maclaine Campbell was awarded the V.C. for his great bravery at Wadi Akarit in April 1943, when his personal influence - under constant close-range enemy fire - changed the tide of battle. In the words of the London Gazette, his ‘magnificent leadership’ could ‘seldom have been surpassed in the long history of the Highland Brigade.’
