Robert Davies was awarded the G.C. for recovering a UXB which had fallen just outside St. Paul’s Cathedral in September 1940. His was the first award of the newly instituted decoration and his deeds received wide coverage in the home press, so much so that he became known as “The Man Who Saved St. Paul’s”.
His full-size awards were sold by Sotheby’s in October 1983 and are now on display at the Imperial War Museum.
