King’s Medal for Native Chiefs, G.V.R., 1st type, Gambia Colony and Protectorate, a massive silver medal, 103mm, fitted with suspension ring and fluted shaped loop, and plain silver link neck chain, 760mm long, nearly extremely fine and very rare £1200-1500
Ex Spink Numismatic Circular, December 1962 (No. 10545, £55) where it stated ‘Extremely rare, only one other medal is known to be in a collection [presumed to be the example in the Patiala collection in India].’
An example of the smaller version of this medal, though still large at 76mm diameter, was sold at Glendining’s in September 1989.
