Edward Clegg was born in Rochdale, Lancashire and attested for service in the 39th Regiment in 1839, aged 18 years. He was discharged at his own request after 21 years service, being in possession of the Maharajpoor Star, the Crimea Medal with one clasp, the Turkish Crimea Medal and the Army L.S.& G.C. Sold with copied service papers.
