James Cockwill was born in Lew Trenchard, Devon and living in Lew Down, enlisted at Barnstaple. Initially Private 2432 in the Royal North Devon Hussars, then serving with the 7th Battalion Duke of Cornwall’s Light Infantry, he was killed in action on 21 November 1917. Having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Cambrai Memorial, Louveral.
