James Armstrong entered the Royal Navy as an Assistant Engineer in January 1879 and during the course of his subsequent appointment aboard H.M.S. Malabar between August 1881 and September 1882, served off Egypt. Gaining steady advancement over the next two decades, he attained the rank of Fleet Engineer in February 1900 and was placed on the Retired List in March 1902. Armstrong died in August 1927.
Sold with a large quantity of original documentation, including letters, examination certificates, commission warrants (5) and ship service slips (or “Flimsies”) for the greater part of his career, 1879-1902; together with an old photograph of the royal yacht Victoria & Albert in dry-dock and his Engineer Officer’s epaulettes (5).
