Robert Herkes was born and resided in Selkirk and enlisted at Galashiels, Scotland. Serving with the 2nd Battalion Scots Guards, he was killed in action on 17 October 1915, aged 20 years. Having no known grave, his name is commemorated on the Loos Memorial.
