John Stevenson, who was born in Liverpool and educated at Gilmour Heath Road School, enlisted in the Royal Air Force in May 1942. Commissioned as a Pilot Officer in the R.A.F.V.R. in June of the following year, he was posted to No. 51 Squadron, a Halifax unit operating out of Snaith, Yorkshire, and went on to win the D.F.C. ‘for gallantry and devotion to duty against the enemy’ (Liverpool Echo refers). The award was announced in The London Gazette on 20 February 1945.
