D.C.M. London Gazette 13 February 1917:
‘For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. He displayed great courage and determination throughout as stretcher-bearer, repeatedly tending wounded men in the open under heavy fire.’
John Maxwell was born in Lockerbie, Scotland. He served during the Great War with the 1st Battalion, Gordon Highlanders in the French theatre of war from 3 January 1915. On his return from war service he was presented with an illuminated scroll from the Burgh of Lockerbie.
Sold with a photographic image of recipient in uniform, and a hand written note from his nephew.
