George Whitcher was born in Southampton in 1864 and attested for the Hampshire Regiment at Lyndhurst, Hampshire, on 19 December 1883. He saw active service in Burma and in South Africa during the Boer War, and was wounded in the former campaign at Mongong. He was discharged on 25 June 1906, after 22 years’ service.
