‘For services in Destroyer and Torpedo Boat Flotillas during the period ending 31 December 1917.’

Baptiste James Handyside was born in Berwick, Northumberland, on 9 October 1876 and joined the Royal Navy as an Acting Engine Room Artificer Fourth Class on 15 December 1898. Advanced Chief Engine Room Artificer Second Class on 18 August 1910, he was awarded his Long Service and Good Conduct Medal on 8 January 1914, and was promoted Chief Engine Room Artificer First Class on 17 August 1915. He served throughout the Great War in H.M.S. Leonidas, and for his services was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal. He was shore pensioned on 9 February 1921.
