James Robertson was born in Dundee, Scotland, on 23 November 1876 and served with Prince Alfred’s Volunteer Guards in South Africa during the Boer War, and subsequently with the 4th South African Infantry during the Great War, attesting on 14 May 1918, and embarking for England on 6 September 1918. He served in France from 4 December 1918 to 15 March 1919 (and consequently was not entitled to the Victory Medal), and was discharged on demobilisation on 24 August 1919.
