Mercantile Marine War Medal 1914-18 (William G. Thorne) nearly extremely fine £60-£80

William G. Thorne died when the S.S. Avanti was sunk on 2 February 1918, by the UB 59 (Kapitänleutnant Erwin Waßner, Pour le Mérite) 4 miles S.E. of St Alban’s Head, whilst on passage from Bilbao to West Hartlepool with a cargo of iron ore. Born in Cardiff in 1900, he was the son of William James and Annie Thorne, of Fitzroy Street, Cathays, Cardiff, he is commemorated by name on the Tower Hill Memorial. Also entitled to British War Medal.
