James Ripley Rutter was born in Durham on 13 May 1878 and was an engineer by trade when he enlisted into the Royal Naval Auxiliary Sick Berth Reserve as a Senior Reserve Attendant on 2 August 1914. He was promoted to Reserve Wardmaster and served at Chatham Hospital from 10 August 1914 for the duration of the war. Reserve Wardmaster was the most senior rate in the Royal Naval Auxiliary Sick Berth Reserve, and equated to Chief Petty Officer status in the Royal Navy. Rutter was ’shore demobilised’ on 12 July 1919.
