John Bishop was born in Leicester in January 1874 ands attested for the Leicestershire Regiment on 2 November 1892, having previously served in the 3rd (Militia) Battalion. He served with the 1st Battalion in South Africa from 17 December 1895 to 9 September 1902, including the entirety of the Boer War. He transferred to the Reserve on 20 March 1903, and was discharged on 1 November 1904, after 12 years’ service.
