Oswald Thomas Walton was born Crofton-on-Tees, Yorkshire, the son of the Rev. John Walton, of Langton-on-Swale, Northallerton, Yorkshire, and was educated at Worksop College and Oxford University. He was commissioned second lieutenant in the South Lancashire Regiment on 22 April 1915 and served with the 3rd Battalion during the Great War on the Western Front from 8 October 1915. He transferred to the Royal Flying Corps, and was killed in action during aerial combat over Baralle, northern France on 12 April 1917, whilst serving with 18 Squadron, when his F.E.2d collided with a German Albatross D.Ill, piloted by the German Ace Lieutenant Adolf Schulte - both men’s planes were destroyed, with both claiming each other as their final victory. He is buried in the H.A.C. Cemetery at Ecoust St. Mein, France.
