William John Goddard was born in East Hendred, Berkshire, and attested into the Royal Berkshire Regiment. He served with the 2nd Battalion in India and was present at 1911 Delhi Durbar, confirmed on the medal roll. He afterwards served during the Great War, on the Western Front, from 6 November 1914, and was killed in action on 29 January 1915. He is buried in Fauquissart Military Cemetery, Laventie, France.
