Patrick Darran served in the Indian Army from 20 February 1856. He was present at the disarming of the rebels at Jullundur on 7 June 1857 and throughout the Siege of Delhi from 23 June 1857. Darran was severely wounded in the elbow upon the climax of the siege on 14 September 1857, when British forces breached the defences and proceeded to wreak havoc against the mutineers and ordinary citizens (London Gazette, 10 February 1858 refers).
