John Gregg was born in Morpeth, Northumberland, on 19 March 1886. A coal miner by trade, he joined the Royal Navy on 6 August 1907 and transferred to the Royal Fleet Reserve at Chatham on 25 August 1912. Posted to H.M.S. Swiftsure, 20 March 1913, he took part in the suppression of arms traffic in the Persian Gulf and was advanced Acting Leading Stoker on 18 February 1915. Transferred to the destroyer H.M.S. Munster, Gregg spent much of the Great War on anti U-boat patrols, firstly out of Scapa Flow, and latterly from Portsmouth. He was shore demobilised in 1921.
